The Classroom Beyond the Shore

Extending beyond California's 1,100-mile coastline is one of its greatest natural resources and limitless opportunities for the future.

National Polytechnic is one of only a few institutions of its kind in the world. Founded 1967 as the College of Oceaneering, it has educated more than 7,000 students and currently graduates close to 300 entry-level diving professionals per year in the fields of hyperbaric medical technology, non-destructive testing technology, underwater welding technology, and marine technologies.

The College of Oceaneering became part of the National University System in 2002 to meet the growing demand for graduates in these fields. Increased energy exploration, heightened national security, and expanding underwater infrastructure all signaled the need for such educational programs. In 2004, the College of Oceaneering was restructured into the National Polytechnic College of Engineering and Oceaneering.

National Polytechnic offers specialized education for law enforcement and homeland security personnel defending harbors, ports, marine shipping and related infrastructure. The recent acquisition of Advanced College of Technology provides additional high-technology curricula to round out the unique program offerings.

National Polytechnic has two locations in Southern California: San Diego and the Port of Los Angeles in Wilmington. The San Diego facility features a 44,000-gallon training tank, a hyperbaric chamber, a nondestructive testing lab, and an open computer lab. Its more than 8,400 graduates are employed in the fields of offshore energy exploration, marine development industries and engineering firms worldwide.
