College of Oceaneering Acquires Advanced College of Technology

June 10, 2004

San Diego, CA - The College of Oceaneering (COO), an affiliate of the National University System, has acquired San Diego-based Advanced College of Technology (ACT). ACT will be reorganized as a division of COO, providing the non-profit institution with high technology curricula and two additional training sites.

ACT was founded in 1995 in Chula Vista. The College moved to Scripps Ranch in 1999 and opened a satellite campus in Mission Valley. It was nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools & Colleges of Technology in August 2000. As a result of the acquisition and approval process, ACT is now regionally accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It offers courses in computer systems and networks, telecommunications and fiber optics.

COO is a leading educator of professionals in commercial diving, nondestructive testing, underwater welding and advanced diving and hyperbaric medicine. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. COO was acquired by the National University System in January 2002.  It provides Associate of Science degrees in marine technologies.  COO's Kearny Mesa facility opened in July 2002 to meet a growing demand for its graduates globally.  Its 44,000-gallon above-ground diving tank provides a controlled environment in which commercial diving students can be safely introduced to basic diver training. It is the first institution to offer a public commercial diving program in San Diego.

The College of Oceaneering's San Diego Facility is located at 3580 Aero Court, just east of Interstate 805, across the street from Montgomery Field.  For more information, contact Hoyt Smith at (858) 642-8111.
