Studies show the benefits of social emotional learning (SEL) in PreK-6, including positive classroom behavior and individual student success, are beginning to drive a more widespread integration of this holistic approach to teaching into schools’ curriculum.
Programs such as Sanford Harmony and Sanford Inspire, inspired by renowned philanthropist T. Denny Sanford and distributed regionally through National University’s Sanford College of Education, offer innovate resources to teach children core relationship-building skills, while also providing support to educators to engage students in these practices.
A panel of researchers and educators at the ASU GSV Summit shared insight on SEL initiatives that involve in a unique university and secondary school regional alliance during the following session: Demonstrating social-emotional learning in grades PK-6 pupils and concurrently for their teachers through impactful university-school showcase partnerships.
Panelists include: Dr. Marc Brackett, Founding Director of the YALE Center for Emotional Intelligence, YALE/RULER; Dr. Donna Elder, Associate Dean of the Sanford College of Education at National University; Dr. Steven Ross, professor and evaluation director of Johns Hopkins University Center for Research and Reform in Education; Mark Mueller, Superintendent of Coronado School District; Dr Donna Elder, Associate Dean of National University’s Sanford College of Education; and Torrie Norton, Associate Faculty and Project Facilitator at National University.
- Dr. Donna Elder, Associate Dean of National University’s Sanford College of Education, which was named in honor of Mr. Sanford and is now the 10th largest education school in the country, discussed the College’s implementation of Sanford Harmony and Sanford Inspire in school and after-school programs. She also shared the process of coordinating with ten elementary schools in San Diego County that fully utilize both programs to serve as showcase schools for further research in SEL integration. “We are pleased to collaborate with education partners and serve as a champion for teachers. By working together, we can provide educators with innovative tools for ongoing professional development and support that keep teachers inspired and students engaged.”
- Dr. Steven Ross, professor and evaluation director of Johns Hopkins University Center for Research and Reform in Education, evaluated these schools and shared results of Sanford Harmony’s ease of implementation.
Sanford Harmony, which includes activities and lessons to develop healthy relationships among children that emphasize communication, collaboration, and respecting differences, has been recognized as a quality SELect program by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). To support teachers with ongoing professional development, Sanford Inspire provides a toolkit of research-based teaching methodologies, and on-demand modules that are accessible online to help teachers create inspiring classroom environments. Both programs are available at no cost to schools and organizations through the generosity of Mr. Sanford. The programs, which are being expanded nationally and globally through the San Diego-based National University System – a network of accredited nonprofit education institutions – are currently reaching more than 8 million students in some of the nation’s largest school districts including Los Angeles, New York and San Diego.

Denny Sanford in conjunction with the San Diego-based National University System (NUS).
