San Diego, CA – November 21, 2019 – The Sanford Institute of Philanthropy is pleased to announce the launch of an affiliated Institute at Candid that will provide educational programs and resources to help nonprofits steward long-lasting donor relationships that increase charitable giving and their positive impact around the country. The Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at Candid is the latest to join the nationwide expansion of Institutes – led by the San Diego-based nonprofit National University System and based on the vision of philanthropist and entrepreneur T. Denny Sanford – that offer emerging and established fundraisers best-in-class tools and training presented by recognized nonprofit leaders, members of academia, and renowned philanthropists.
Through the arrangement, the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at Candid has access to a unique, comprehensive curriculum that blends best practices from the business and nonprofit sectors, empowering fundraisers to more effectively advance their causes and greatly impact their organizations and communities. This foundational and transformative approach to fundraising, defined as Cause Selling, was designed by the founding Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at National University in 2014. To date, affiliate Institutes have been established at 17 universities across the country and fostered more than 300,000 interactions to inspire and train fundraisers. The growing network of Sanford Institute of Philanthropy affiliates include City University of Seattle and John F. Kennedy, both part of the National University System, as well as Long Island University in New York, Howard University in District of Columbia, Xavier University in Louisiana, and Texas A&M Central in Laredo.

Candid, which was formed earlier this year when Foundation Center and GuideStar joined forces, brings over 85 years of combined experience to provide data, technology, research, and training tools to more than 16 million social-sector professionals worldwide. The new Institute aligns with Candid’s mission to better equip fundraisers with relevant resources to strategically advance their causes. As a leading source on global philanthropy and nonprofit organizations, Candid’s affiliation with the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy enables them to offer engaging Cause Selling content and curriculum to help their users strengthen relationships with individual donors in a structured way.
The Cause Selling approach is based on Mr. Sanford’s personal experiences as a donor, giving more than $2 billion to causes for education, health, and children worldwide, and his recognition that fundraising effectiveness can be strengthened through approaches that emphasize business and sales principles.
As a result, each affiliated Institute, including Candid, offers programming based on Cause Selling principles that are taught through online training, in-person workshops, and fundraising academies by nonprofit leaders who incorporate their own professional and regional perspective to the content. Additionally, nonprofit professionals pursuing a Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) certification can articulate credit earned through the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy training.
The Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at Candid will be holding in-person training sessions during November and December to serve nonprofit professionals in Washington, D.C., California, New York, and Ohio. These sessions qualify for CFRE credits and provide fundraisers key takeaways to put into action right away and strengthen their relationships with donors.
The second edition publication of the Institute’s industry-leading book Cause Selling The Sanford Way: A Guide to Relationship-Driven Fundraising further advances the Institute’s mission to make training tools and resources more accessible to fundraising professionals nationwide. The one-of-a-kind book, which was developed by the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at National University and is available on Amazon in both hardcover and digital format, outlines in detail how the Cause Selling approach can strengthen fundraising effectiveness and includes practical applications to cultivate donor relationships that are presented through case studies and step-by-step guides.
The Sanford Institute of Philanthropy is one of three programs that address solutions in the education and nonprofit sectors and that are aligned with the mission and vision of the education-focused nonprofit National University System. The three Sanford Programs – which include Sanford Harmony and Sanford Inspire – are based on the vision of Mr. Sanford and are being expanded nationally and globally by the National University System.
